The Problem Isn’t Them. It’s Us.

There has been a lot of discussion in the Agile coaching and training community about the current state of our industry. I mostly don’t participate—because most people don’t understand my position anyway. For years, I’ve felt like a voice crying in the wilderness.

But let’s be honest about something:

If the people we claim to serve don’t find value in what we do… that’s on us.

Not them.

Us.

So the real question is simple:
What value do we actually bring today?

Because if the answer is “not much,” then we don’t need better messaging—we need to change.

Or die.

I became a Certified Scrum Trainer in 2008. The problems I was helping people solve back then? Completely different from the problems teams face now.

So why are so many of us still showing up the same way?

Same thinking.
Same tools.
Same workshops.

Just… ported onto Miro or Mural.

We took in-person content, flattened it onto a digital canvas, and kept running the same plays. Same clever exercises. Same “lightning games.” Same riffs. I know I did.

And we tell ourselves it’s working. I know I did.

Meanwhile, modern developers and product people walk away with… what, exactly?

Not much they can actually use.

That’s on us. That’s on me.

We haven’t evolved our thinking. And I’m trying to…
We haven’t evolved our approach. And I definitely have been…
We’ve just changed the medium.

And that’s not transformation—that’s theater.

But… whatever… what do I know?

We don’t need “transformation” we need reformation…
